What is the Georgia Skydiving League?
The GSL is a competition league of 4-way formation skydiving teams. Teams compete in one of two divisions: Intermediate or Rookie. Your team can compete in either division, although we recommend competing at least one year in the Rookie division before moving up to the Intermediate division. The divisions are designed to match skydivers at similar experience levels against each other, from A-License holders to professional teams.
When are the competitions?
A schedule of meets is posted each year on the GSL web site at www.gaskyleague.com. Each meet includes 6 rounds (jumps) for Open and 4 rounds for Intermediate. All meets are held on Saturdays with the weather day set for Sunday. Registration is at
8 a.m. and most competitions last approximately 7 hours. Flyers announcing the events are posted at each host drop zone and you can also join our e-mail list by contacting GSL League Director Anthony at anthony@gaskyleague.com.
How do I join?
At a minimum, all you need is a group of four skydivers who want to make 4 or 6 jumps together for one day in a GSL competition. Just show up on the day of competition, register your team and make the jumps. You should also have a cameraman to video your jumps for the day. If you have trouble locating a cameraman, contact the GSL at
anthony@gaskyleague.com.
Are there medals or prizes?
The top 3 teams in each division are awarded medals from the GSL. Teams who compete in at least 2 of the GSL meets are eligible for end-of-the-year medals and trophies.
What happens on competition day?
There are 4 or 6 rounds of competition depending upon whether your team entered Intermediate or Open. For each round you will be given a set of formations you have to build for that jump. Your team will build those formations over and over until your breakoff altitude. Exit altitude for competition jumps is 10,500 feet. A cameraman will video your dive and then your team will be scored by a GSL judge who determines the number of correct formations built during the 35 seconds of working time. The 35 seconds starts when your team exits the plane.
How much does it cost?
The meet registration fee for each competitor is $20/person. The jump price is $21/slot with the video slot provided free by the host DZ.
What if my team wants to practice before the meet?
The GSL encourages practice jumps and has several resources to help you get started. After putting together your team of 4 skydivers, you’ll want to download and print out the 4-way formation skydiving dive pool from www.omniskore.com and click on the IPC dive pool link. Your team will want to concentrate on learning the 16 random formations, labeled A-Q. Put 3 of these formations together in a sequence, practice building these on the ground by walking the formations standing up and then on creepers. Once you know the dive, go jump the dive! A new team will want to work on matching fall rates, taking the correct grips and staying close between formations. One important note for beginning teams; there must be complete separation (all members off grips) between each random formation. The complete competition rules are available from the USPA. Rules for GSL meets are on the GSL web site.
Is there anyone who can help me put a team together or coach my team?
Contact the GSL if you need help putting a team together. Anthony can put you in contact with the closest skydivers looking for teams as well as GSL coaches. You can also talk with the established teams at your drop zone. There are several 4-way teams throughout Georgia that can assist you in starting your own team and most have a coaching program in place.
